Creepy Cute Exhibition – July 6 2011

Creepy CuteWell it has been far too long since my last post, but there is good reason for it. I have been crazily preparing for my first major exhibition Creepy Cute, which I’m doing in collaboration with the very talented Minnette Michael.

The event is 6 months in the making and will feature many illustrative works by myself, and jewellery pieces by Minnette. Creepy Cute is as the title suggests a combination of monster creepiness, and deliriously colourful cuteness. An exceptional mix, that leaves the door wide open for some serious creativity. More

Schaffas 2 Exhibition Recap

Schaffas 2 Exhibition AdelaideA while ago now, back in August of 2009 i was involved in a great little exhibition held by Chris Edser & Sam Barratt, the guys behind Screamdance.com. I didn’t have a blog at that point so i didn’t get a chance to write much about the event and how the whole shindig went down. The exhibition was all about the little wooden guy to your left, the scientific name for this peculiar creature being a ‘Schaffas’. Certainly one of the most interesting projects i’ve been involved with so far.

Swampland By Zutto

Swampland By ZuttoThis is an amazing piece of illustration work by an artist called Zutto. There is so much depth to these illustrations you can quite seriously get lost in the detail. Definitely one of my highlights for 2010.  I just love the fact that although some of the characters are being eaten they still look so damn happy! If you wish to see more from this artist, check out www.behance.net/orange_zutto or www.zuttoworld.com

Illustrator Tutorial – Simple Skull Vector Icon

Illustrator Tutorial - Creepy Skull VectorAfter spending the last 6 years furiously consuming tutorial after tutorial to learn and better my Illustrator skills it’s time to give something back. This is a beginners tutorial in Illustrator, describing in detail the design of a simple but fun looking skull and cross bones. I find the best way to learn something like Illustrator is to jump straight into using the tools. The tools i’ve picked are basic tools you need to get to know so you feel comfortable working your way around Illustrator.  I’ve created this in Illustrator CS5, if you have an older version of Illustrator don’t worry i’ve only used the very basic tools so you should be able to follow every step.

Pseudo’s Daughter By Jared Nickerson

Pseudo's Daughter By Jared NickersonThis is an older design but a good one. I remember seeing this design when i was just starting to come to grips with digital illustration and finding my own style. Jared Nickerson is one of my all time favourite digital artists, and has been a huge influence on the direction of my own work. His simple use of lines and creepy themes backed up by a huge burst of colour is infectious. Make sure you check out Jared’s Behance portfolio which is chock full of amazing works. www.behance.net/j3concepts More

2011 The Year Of The Monster

Creepy Cute Exhibition

Here we are again, at the beginning of another new year. Greetings 2011!

For me, 2010 was a great year – working simultaneously on Poke Something That Bites and Alltraders. The year was filled to the brim with challenges and projects that have been both interesting and successful. Taking on a leading design role at Alltraders with projects like Harbour Town, La Cantina, Photography MIA & Joomtraders has been loads of fun. Not to mention enjoying the newly expanded web team which claimed 2 great new designers with energy and talent to burn, an SEO guy with dangerous hawk like analytical eyes, and 2 additional programmers who do amazing things with their enormous brains. 2011 is going to be a very, very busy year for Alltraders and the team. Marigold Glass – Logo Design

Marigold Glass - Handmade JewelleryBehance is not always the best place for projects i’ve been working on so how else can i showcase them? Ah my new blog, of course! The following logo design was for the business ‘Marigold Glass – Handmade Jewellery’, a business run solely by Sally Goldsmith who actually makes the jewellery herself. The logo had to represent the jewellery which is always very bold in colour but simple in design. Using the idea of the ‘Marigold’, which is a stunning red flower i was able to come up with the following. More

Joomtraders Icons

Joomtraders icon - Plurk LargeAside from my usual job of designing logos and websites, i also have the neat little job of designing the Joomtraders icons. Joomtraders is quite new in the grand scheme of things but is very quickly growing into a great resource for Joomla! developers around the world. Joomtraders is powered by Alltraders, and is our little playground for creating useful extensions for the Joomla! CMS. If there’s a need in the Joomla! community for a new extension we try to provide a solution. Examples of this include extensions that let you send recently published articles directly to Facebook and Twitter, easy to use photo galleries, Google sitemaps, and an extension that intergrates Mail Chimp into your Joomla! powered website. Adelaide Fringe Poster 2011

Adelaide Fringe 2011After considering submitting a poster entry for the Adelaide Fringe 2011, it quickly became clear that the Fringe poster competition is in fact no longer a poster design competition. It has become merely a character design competition. The requirements were to supply a symbol/character design only – as the text/font, and the colours for the posters had already been chosen. After looking at the colours and fonts Fringe organisers wanted artists to adhere to, i decided it wasn’t for me – but i went along and designed a poster anyway. If you are a designer then you will know how frustrating and difficult it is to make an already existing, bad piece of design look good. More
